How to Save Tomato Seeds
1. Choose the Right Tomatoes
• Select fully ripe, healthy fruits from open-pollinated or heirloom varieties (not hybrids).
• Avoid diseased or damaged tomatoes.
2. Scoop and Ferment
• Cut the tomato and scoop the seeds (with surrounding gel) into a jar or bowl.
• Add a little water and label the container.
• Let it sit at room temperature for 2–4 days to ferment. Stir daily.
• A moldy film will form—this is normal and helps remove the germination-inhibiting gel.
3. Rinse and Dry
• Once fermentation is complete, add water, stir, and let good seeds sink.
• Pour off floating debris and repeat until water runs clear.
• Drain and spread seeds on a non-stick surface (like a paper plate or coffee filter).
• Let them dry in a well-ventilated, shaded area for 1–2 weeks. Stir occasionally to prevent clumping.
4. Label and Store
• Once fully dry, store seeds in a labeled envelope or airtight container.
• Keep in a cool, dark, dry place—a fridge or freezer works well for long-term storage.
